Literary Dinner 2009: Report by Ann Boyd: On the evening of 30th October - a very wet one in Glasgow! - 40 members and guests assembled in the Hilton Grosvenor Hotel for our annual Literary Dinner, with our President Margaret Brown in the Chair and the author - Beatrice Colin on this occasion - sponsored again by the Milngavie Bookshop.

The meal was excellent and, judging by the decibels, so was the conversation. Bestrice Colin then spoke briefly about her early life and especially her travels with her great-auntt, who stimulated her interest in Berlin where she had lived. The author then read long passages from her book, The Luminous Life of Lilly Aphrodite (set in Berlin in the early 1900s), before answering questions. This she did very ably, and there were indeed many questions. A most apt vote of thanks from Cynthia Grice then brought the formal proceedings to a close.

The Elizabeth Wallace Memorial Lecture was held on Wednesday 8th April at 6pm in the Boyd Orr lecture theatre 2, University Avenue/University Gardens.

Elizabeth Wallace (1879-1956), well known for her work with students in Queen Margaret College and Glasgow University, was an Honorary Vice President of our Association. She left a bequest to the Association and additional funds were put with this to provide for a memorial lecture to be held every few years. The lectures were to be open to the public and to be given by 'some outstanding person'. This year we were delighted to welcome as our speaker, Jo Swinson, the MP for East Dunbartonshire, currently the youngest MP in the House of Commons. Her title was: “Experiences of a Female MP: Overcoming the Ultimate Old Boys Club”.

Elizabeth Wallace Lecture: Wednesday 8th April 2009: Report by Cynthia Grice

The Scottish Federation of University Women- Glasgow Association held its Elizabeth Wallace Memorial Public Lecture in April, when Jo Swinson, Liberal Democrat MP for East Dunbartonshire spoke on  “Experiences of a Female MP: Overcoming the Ultimate Old Boys Club”.

This was an enjoyable evening as Ms Swinson was a very lively speaker. She spoke about what brought her into politics – the school debating society; Her first election – standing against John Prescott in Hull; then finally being selected for the East Dunbartonshire seat, her home territory.

As the youngest MP she had many tales to tell about finding her way along the “corridors of power’ and trying to work out the rules of the club. She told these stories in a light hearted manner which brought laughter from her audience. We heard of her Maiden Speech, her first question at Prime Minister’s Question Time. If she handled these situations as well as she handled this lecture, the affairs of the people of East Dunbartonshire are in a safe pair of hands.

She finally answered questions from a very enthusiastic audience. All in all, a most interesting and informative evening.

The Annual Literary Dinner was held in Lux Restaurant on Friday 26th October 2007. The Speakers were Anna Magnusson, author of  ‘The Sky's the Limit’, and Vicky Jack the climber of ‘The Sky’s the Limit’. It was Sponsored this year by The Milngavie Bookshop.

It was a fascinating evening, with excellent food and conversation, and a journey from The Munros of Scotland to the top of Everest!
