Dundee News (October / November 2011)

Annual Prize: At the October meeting the Dundee Association annual book token prize for £50 was presented to Rebecca Kindlen of Dundee University. Rebecca is a charming very enthusiastic girl, who was a hairdresser for six years. She had always wanted to attend University. She came across a poster about the Summer School and realised that this could be her (only) chance to realise her dream. In her spare time she sings with a band named 'The Peski Kings' and swims daily at 6am to keep fit. She admits that re-entering the education 'arena' again was "no easy task" and spent long nights -studying. She has been admitted to the BA Hons. course at Dundee University and hopes to qualify as a Social Worker in due course.
Also at the October meeting, Rebecca Cimino, a PhD student from St Andrews University, was presented with a cheque for £2500. This was for the British Federation Barbara Northend Scholarship, and was presented by Jean MacDonald. Roberta is researching 'Italian queens in the 9th and 10th centuries'

Award
Jean MacDonald, Roberta, Madge Salariya (Dundee President), and Rebecca.

The Dundee Association's 23rd Annual Literary Dinner, held on Thursday 3rd November in the Invercarse Hotel was a resounding success. We were delighted to have Dame Joan Bakewell and Mr Christopher Ward as speakers at what has become a very popular event indeed.
250 people enjoyed an excellent meal, very pleasant company and splendid entertainment.
Dame Joan presented her most recent publication “She’s Leaving Home”, in a most entertaining way. Her book gives a fascinating insight into life in the sixties and tells of the experiences of a young girl leaving home and making her way in the world during such changing times.
Christopher Ward spoke about his book “And the Band Played On” which tells the story of his grandfather, who played the violin in the orchestra on board the Titanic the night the ship went down.
