|
The aims of SFUW-A are:
- to promote lifelong education for women and girls
- to foster international cooperation, friendship, peace, and respect for human rights
- to advocate for the advancement of the status of women and girls
- to encourage and enable women and girls to apply their knowledge and skills in leadership and decision-making in all forms of public and private life
|
|
|
|
| To meet these aims we run a programme of monthly events that features invited speakers, social outings, and festive meals. The SFUW-A maintains close links with other SFUW local associations in Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Inverclyde & District. Some of our members are also associated with federations of university women in other countries. |

NEWS: SFUW Aberdeenshire association 2009–10
New mentoring scheme at the University of Aberdeen
Good mentoring promotes good leadership. The SFUW Aberdeenshire association is pleased to support a new mentoring scheme at the University of Aberdeen to be launched on 28 September 2009. Mentoring could be described as a process in which a person (mentor) is responsible for encouraging and assisting another person (mentee) in their career and development. This new mentoring scheme aligns with the principles of the revised Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, which are included in the University’s Strategy for Research Excellence.
The scheme is aimed at those wishing:
- to plan and take charge of their career development
- to source coaching, advice, and training opportunities
- to gain from others’ experience in teaching, applying for grants, and how to publish
- to gain from others’ experience in dealing with colleagues, including those in positions of authority
- to understand the structures of the University and how to get things done
- to expand their current positions and raise their profile within the University
- to enhance their skills, knowledge, and confidence for taking on leadership roles.

NEWS 2008-2009: The European Platform of Women Scientists (EPWS) works in achieving equal and full participation of women in science. This is a priority of the European Commission and is considered very important for the safeguarding of excellence and diversity in science in Europe. The Platform was created to address the current chronic under-representation of women in research and research decision-making positions. It is currently funded by the European Commission's DG Research. For further details see:

In 2007 the SFUW-A supported an application by one of our members, Lindsay Milligan from the School of Language and Literature, for an International Federation of University Women (IFUW) Postgraduate Fellowship. We held a number of successful social events including a lunch for a visiting guest, Ruth Worobetz, from the Canadian Federation of University Women. We also invited senior women from the University of Aberdeen to become honorary members of the SFUW-A as part of a strategy to strengthen cross-disciplinary networks among female staff and to promote female academic achievement. Professor Neva Haites and Professor Jenny Mordue became the first honorary members of the association in December.

On Friday 7 March the SFUW-A hosted a lunch to celebrate International Women’s Day. Guests included Elaine Robertson, International Strategist in Community Planning and Regeneration from Aberdeen City Council, and four delegates from the Gomel City Executive Council and Belarusian Economic Trade University. International Women’s Day provides a perfect opportunity to promote cross-cultural interaction. For many attending the lunch it was the first time they had spoken through an interpreter and heard first-hand about professional women’s experiences of living and working in Belarus. The delegates from Gomel were visiting Aberdeen at the invitation of the Aberdeen City Council. They also attended an event on 8 March staged by the Aberdeen Women’s Alliance.
Photography competition and SFUW-A calendar: The first annual SFUW-A photography competition was launched in December. Thirty-one photographs were submitted to two judges, Anne Holford and David Shale, who were asked to select the best in four categories (Education, Economy, Environment, and Human Rights) taken from the current IFUW Programme for Action ‘Women: Agents for Change’. The winning entries will appear in the SFUW-A calendar currently being prepared for printing.
